of chicago. ♪ >> this week brought back memories of the day newt gingrich gave us his contract for america. today, he is occupied with dreams of being president of less than six weeks to go before the midterm election, house republicans revealed a new pledge to america which proposes to extend the bush tax cuts and shutting down the health care law. it involves pulling back on stimulus money and reducing the size of the federal government. what is new on this? >> nothing, it is a portable document which means it is dishonest. they say they will reduce deficits by cutting taxes. it just won't happen. most voters know it is dishonest and it is a document they don't believe in. >> i watched this unveiling as i watched the democrats and it just seems like noise at this point, meaningless noise. in this case it was orchestrated in order to have no ties and everyone sitting around trying to be something there were not and that is exactly what it looked like them up. as far as the november elections, this will not be a positive. it gets them off the party of being no and put something out there.
financial protection bureau. thank you for joining us. i am in for gordon peterson who is off this week. we'll start with the primary elections topped by the christine o'donnell victory over mike castle for the senate nomination in delaware. she won with the backing of sarah palin and the south carolina governor and rush limbaugh and sean hannity. how do you feel three days later? >> all buckley always said to support the most right-wing candidate that is a delectable. i think they broke that rule and it could cost republicans control of the senate. >> it looks like we have this anger we have been talking about and this looks like a temper tantrum that ran amok. there have been some tea party candidates that have been nominated and have sent a message and made a statement and can win and compete in the fall. in this case, she was going to have to run against the democratic party and much of the republican party as well. >> in addition to the buckley rule, ronald reagan also had an 11th commandment which is not talk badly of another republican in public. they have a lot to say about christin
children's generation will be better than it was for us? 66% to not confident. is america in a state of decline? 65% believe the country is in a state of decline. how do you combat that? >> it is tough to do. america has historically, internationally, been the home of national optimism. this is the most optimistic place on the place of the earth -- face of the earth. optimism breeds confidence. whether you want to take a chance on the gi bill, air, water, pollution acts that may difference -- the people that lack optimism, there is a sense of hunkering down. i cannot be concerned about other people. it makes me more self test, self-absorbed. it has a political ripple effect. i do not think that has been totally calculated. >> the president says we will put money into infrastructure. john boehner says we are going to cut taxes and government spending. how does that instill confidence in the american people? >> it does not compute. this is all meant to benefit the economic system, but how does it affect me? they do not feel it. both sides, politicians, they have really lost some credib
the world situation and therefore for us less safe because while saddam hussein was despicable, he actually did control the country. there was no al-qaida there when he was in power because it would have been a threat to him. therefore, but the counterbalance he provided to iran and the control over terrorism cells and his own country probably in any sort of cold hearted national security way was beneficial to us, not the other way round. as long as he did not have weapons of mass destruction since we had a good inspection system and he did not have weapons of mass destruction, i think that probably for us it was not a bad situation. it was terrible for the iraqi people but they were doing okay economically. >> all this concern for the iraqis is an incredible amnesia. the complaint of the left before the war in the clinton administration was protect relentlessly over this. thousands of iraqis were dying because of the embargo especially iraqi children, tens of thousands. if you want to make a tally of their losses, you have to remember what the situation was at the time. secondly, as this c
